A Journey of Recovery and Rediscovery at Cumbrae Lodge Care Home

Anne, a resident

Anne is an 87-year-old lady who moved into Cumbrae Lodge Care Home following a fall in her garden, which resulted in a broken arm. After a period in hospital and rehabilitation, it was felt she would benefit from ongoing palliative care support due to her reduced mobility and overall condition.

When Anne arrived at our home, her mobility was very limited and her confidence had significantly declined. Previously a very independent lady, Anne had always enjoyed gardening, baking and playing bowls, but found it difficult to adjust to relying on support from others. The transition was understandably emotional, and she initially struggled with anxiety and uncertainty in her new environment.

Despite these challenges, Anne has shown remarkable determination and resilience throughout her journey at the home.

Challenges and Support

With consistent daily encouragement and a person-centred approach from staff, Anne’s mobility has improved significantly. She is now able to walk more confidently using her walking aid and continues to build strength day by day.

Understanding how important gardening has always been to her, the team arranged a raised garden bed so Anne could safely return to something she loves. This has allowed her to continue planting and caring for flowers and plants independently, giving her a renewed sense of purpose.

At first, Anne found it difficult to engage socially and often preferred to stay in quieter spaces. However, through gentle encouragement and reassurance, she has gradually begun to take part in more activities. She now attends most group sessions and enjoys being involved in daily life at the home.

Anne has particularly enjoyed baking sessions, gardening activities and social events, all of which have played a key role in rebuilding her confidence and supporting her emotional wellbeing. She also arrived with wounds that have now fully healed, marking another important milestone in her recovery.

Positive Outcomes and Progress

Anne has made a remarkable recovery since arriving at Cumbrae Lodge Care Home and no longer requires the level of care originally anticipated when she moved from hospital.

Her mobility and confidence have improved significantly, and she is now able to move around the home more independently with her walking aid. She has also developed strong and positive relationships with both residents and staff, becoming a valued part of the community.

Gardening has become a particularly important therapeutic activity for Anne, helping to improve her mood, reduce anxiety and provide a meaningful daily focus. The opportunity to reconnect with something she has always loved has had a clear and positive impact on her overall wellbeing.

Anne continues to grow in confidence every day and looks forward to taking part in gardening, baking and social activities within the home.
